In May 1979, the third generation model, the Volkswagen t3, after the Volkswagen T2, began to be produced at the factory in Hanover. With this generation, unlike the previous two generations, the rounded lines on the outside of the vehicle have left their place for sharper lines.

In the Volkswagen t3, the dimensions of the windows and the tailgate have been enlarged. The headlights were round, as used in previous generations. It changed its appearance with a black plastic piece on top of the chrome-plated steel bumpers.

In February 1981, production of the Volkswagen t3 began, featuring the 1.6 L (1,588 ccs) displacement 37 kW (52 bhp) water-cooled diesel engine used in the Golf. In September of the same year, the Carat, a more luxurious version of the Caravelle with a different interior design and seating for seven, was introduced.

Later in October, two different versions of the Volkswagen t3 with a 1.9 L (1,913 ccs) displacement of 44 kW (60 bhp) and a 57 kW (78 bhp) gasoline engine with the same displacement began to be produced. The production of versions of Volkswagen t3s with the same engine was discontinued.

In August 1983, Volkswagen continued to refine its T3 design, which featured four rectangular headlights above the grille. In 1984, vehicles with a 2.1 L (2,109 cc) 82 kW (112 PS) petrol engine and a 1.6 L (1 1,588 cc) 51 kW (70 PS) diesel engine went on sale as alternatives. Both have become standard.

In 1985, the Volkswagen t3 model underwent a significant overhaul. Changes were made in areas such as the exhaust system, front suspension, sliding door locks, and closed injection systems.

In the same year, Volkswagen t3 vehicles with a 2.1 L (2.109 ccs) volume and a 70 kW (95 PS) engine were also produced as alternatives. Production of the Volkswagen t3 was discontinued at the Hannover plant in September 1990, while production in the Republic of South Africa continued until June 2002.

Volkswagen t3 never lost its popularity after its production ended in the 90s. It is one of the rare vehicles sought after by many campers and adventure lovers today.
