巴巴羅薩行動計劃忽略了克里米亞半島，但在從塞瓦斯托波爾出發的蘇聯空軍襲擊了羅馬尼亞的重要油田後，德國人很快改變了主意，決定佔領克里米亞。第一次突破別列科普地峽到達克里米亞半島的嘗試因蘇聯反擊突破羅馬尼亞前線主線而中斷。這種干擾使得蘇聯海軍能夠將其沿海陸軍從敖德薩撤至塞瓦斯托波爾，粉碎了德國在該地區快速獲勝的夢想。如果說穿越別列科普地峽需要兩次嘗試，那麼軸心國軍隊在試圖奪取塞瓦斯托波爾的控制權時也面臨著同樣的挫敗感：在迅速佔領克里米亞半島的大部分地區後，德軍對塞瓦斯托波爾的攻勢多次被紅軍打斷在克里米亞半島的不同地區進行兩棲登陸。
