Cellular Automata

A Cellular Automaton is a cell within a grid of a rule based system. Each cell is 'Alive' or 'Dead' based on the states of neighbouring cells and a set of rules. Complex emergent behaviours have been shown to emerge from relatively simple rules, with Conway's' Game of Life being the most well known example of Cellular Automaton.

Use this simulator to explore how different survival rules for two dimensional cellular automaton create different emergent behaviours and patters, or perhaps explore how small changes in a stable simulation can cause utter chaos!

Discover different emerging behaviours, from groups of cells that oscillate from one shape to the next endlessly, to groups of cells that glide across the grid.
