Golden Gate Bridge a suspension bridge across the Golden Gate Strait. It connects the city of San Francisco in the north of the peninsula of San Francisco and the southern part of Marin County near the suburb of Sausalito. The Golden Gate Bridge was the largest suspension bridge in the world since its opening in 1937 and until 1964. In 1867, the Sausalito Land and Ferry Company (Sausalito Land and Ferry Company) established a special service that eventually evolved into the Golden Gate Ferry Company (the Golden Gate Ferry Company) a subsidiary of the Southern Pacific Railroad. By the end of the 1920s the Golden Gate Ferry Company was the largest firm in terms of the number of ferry operations. Automobile ferries have become very profitable and important factor for the economy of the region.

Many people wanted a bridge to be built that would connect San Francisco with Marin County. San Francisco was by then the largest American city which was served mainly by ferries. Because of the lack of permanent communication with the settlements in other parts of the Gulf area the growth rate of the city was lower than the national average. Many experts however believed that the bridge could not be built above the strait at 6,700 ft with its strong and highly swirling tides 372 ft deep in the center of the canal and frequent strong winds. In their opinion fierce winds and strong fogs would interfere with construction and operation.
