The story begins with Kagome Higurashi, a 15-year-old schoolgirl from Tokyo who returns to Sengoku-era Japan after falling into a well at her family shrine, where she encounters a half-human canine demon—Inuyasha. When a monster from that era tried to take Kagome's Shikon no Tama crystal ball, he accidentally broke the crystal into many pieces scattered all over Japan. Inuyasha and Kagome embark on a journey to gather them before the powerful and evil half-spider demon Naraku finds them all. Inuyasha and Kagome make several friends along their journey, including Shippo, Miroku, Sango and Kirara.
