Creative Teatime Quilt Tutorial

Quick no-sew quilt features a trio of cheerful teacups.

Materials

STYROFOAM Brand Foam

Sheet, 1" x 12" x 36" (see note)

Other Materials

Fabric: 1/2 yd. dark print for borders, lattice an

1/4 yd. for each cup; 1/4 yd. cream for background

Saw tooth hanger and nails

(Note: If a large sheet is not available, several

sheets can be joined together using toothpicks and

Thick, white craft glue

Instructions

1. Cut foam sheet to measure 29-1/2" x 10". (HINT: For smoother cuts,

wax the knife blade with an old candle.) Following Figure 1, use a ruler and

fineline marker to transfer all solid lines onto foam sheet.

Score lines with sharp pencil.

2. Cut out patterns for Cup 1 and Cup 3. Pin patterns in place on foam sheet;

trace around cups with sharp pencil, scoring foam.

3. Cut fabrics as follows:

a. From fabric for back, border and lattice:

a. 15" x 34-1/4" (back & border)

b. Two 1-3/4" x 8-3/4" (lattice)

b. From background fabric:

a. Six 1-3/4" x 9-1/4" (Strip A)

b. One 1-3/4" x 6-3/4" (Strip B)

c. One 6-3/4" x 3-1/4" (Strip D)

d. One each Pattern 1, 2, 3, 4 (NOTE: Add 3/8" seam allowance when

cutting out these pattern pieces)

c. From cup fabrics:

e. One 6-3/4" x 5-3/4" (Strip C)

f. Cup 1 and Cup 3 (NOTE: Add 3/8" seam allowance when cutting out

these pattern pieces)

4. Work on a flat surface when "quilting" with the fabric and foam.

Start with the middle cup, Strip C. Refer to the diagram and center Strip C

in its corresponding position on the foam sheet. Position artist's knife

or putty knife on the fabric directly over the scored line and holding the

knife straight up and down, push seam allowance into foam along the scored line.

The straighter the knife is held, the cleaner and straighter the "seam" line

will appear. Continue "quilting" the fabric pieces, working from the

center to the outer areas.

5. To cover the back and create the border, center quilt, right side up,

on the wrong side of the corresponding fabric piece. Tuck long edges of fabric

into the scored border line on front; tuck short edges. Trim excess fabric at

corners and tuck corners, creating a mitered "seam".

6. Cut three handles and three hearts from cup fabrics. Refer to

photograph and glue to quilt.

7. Using fineline permanent marker, draw stitching lines 1/4" inside each

block and 1/4" inside and outside of each heart.

8. Place glue on nail tips, insert through hanger and push intocenter

back of quilt, 1" from top.
