Grado SR325x Guide

The Prestige range of headphones has been at the heart of Grado's production line since they were first introduced three decades ago. As the knot was tied over the years, Grado always made small advances. The story is not the same for this new generation "x".

Place the range-topping SR325x behind its flagship predecessor (What Hi-Fi? The SR325e walked away with an award), and there's little to separate them, separating the gaze from the new flat foam earpads and updated, lighter-coloured cables on the padded Batman headband.

As is usual with Grado, most of the important work is invisible. The 44mm drive unit has been significantly changed with a revised drive system, new jack and upgraded coil. The goal is to reduce distortion.

For example, this new cable uses 8 "ultra-grade" annealed copper conductors that are claimed to deliver purer sound than that used before. They are now released with a 3.5mm headphone jack, but also called a 6.3mm adapter.

Elsewhere, the SR325x remains as before. It's still reminiscent of the headphones used by a motion control operator in the 1940s. It's pretty much a comeback that divides opinion between What Hi-Fi? a team.

Its innovative design means eating, but it also accomplishes almost nothing in the way of isolating noise from the environment. If you're having fun in the dinner room, be prepared for your listening experience when you're not there at all.

Grado Prestige Series Headphones have rarely become a thing of the past, and they haven't made a dent with this new generation. It starts with the dollop, which still persists in a basic cardboard box, and is the somewhat coarse soap we use in our new Japanese massage pads as well. If you're looking for more focus, you won't find it here.
