Oleander ( Nérium ) is a monotypic genus of flowering plants of the Kutrovye family. The only species a shrub widely distributed in the subtropical regions of the planet.

As an ornamental plant oleander is widely used in landscape design in regions with a subtropical climate. It is also cultivated as a beautifully flowering houseplant.

Oleander is a poisonous plant so caution is required when cultivating it. juice contains a number of cardiac glycosides some of which find medical application.

The homeland of oleander is a vast strip of dry and semi-dry subtropics from Morocco and Portugal in the west to southern China in the east. Wild oleander often occupies the bed of drying up rivers.

On the territory of the former USSR it is grown on the Southern coast of the Crimea the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus in Transcaucasia in the southern regions of Central Asia.

Oleander a large evergreen shrub with branching stems of brownish color covered with rounded lenticels. Leaves are narrow, up to 10-15 cm in length and up to 3 cm in width lanceolate or linearly lanceolate, entire or uncarred on short petioles glabrous leathery with a light median vein located opposite or in whorls of 3 or 4. flowers are bright large five-membered in corymbose inflorescences at the ends of shoots.

Corolla can be of different colors white and pink petals are most common red and yellow are more common. A variety of oleander varieties with flowers of various colors and forms including those with double flowers have been derived. The flowering time depends on the climate it can last from the beginning of summer to the middle of autumn.
