The rosary is a traditional Catholic prayer that commemorates twenty mysteries of the life of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary, reciting after each one announcing our father, ten Hail Marys and a glory to the Father. It is frequently designated as Holy Rosary by Catholics. The Church has always recognized a particular efficacy of the Rosary, entrusting it, through its community recitation and its constant practice, with the most difficult causes. Saint John Paul II said: Through the rosary the faithful receive abundant graces, from the very hands of the Mother of the Redeemer.

The rosary has its roots in the 9th century. It is the repetition of acclamations and praises that appear in the Gospel of Luke to form the Hail Mary together with a rich set of hymns and prayers typical of Eastern liturgies.

A very important phenomenon around this devotion was that of public or street rosaries, which arose in Seville in 1690 and spread very quickly throughout Spain and its American colonies.

On October 16, 2002, Pope John Paul II promulgated the Apostolic Letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae, in which he considered it appropriate to add five new mysteries to the rosary, the luminous mysteries.

Each series of mysteries comprises five different themes for meditation, each representing a moment in the life of Jesus and the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus. The rosary represents the roses, as a prayer that are offered to the Virgin Mary, in her different stages of life as mysteries.

Traditionally, the rosary was dedicated to one of three series of mysteries that had to be recited sequentially, one for each night. According to that current praxis, Monday and Thursday were dedicated to the joyful mysteries, Tuesday and Friday to the painful, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday to the glorious ».7

On October 16, 2002, John Paul II promulgated his apostolic letter, Rosary of the Virgin Mary, in which he considered it appropriate to incorporate the so-called luminous mysteries into the rosary.

Forms of prayer

    1.While holding the crucifix the sign of the cross is made and then the Act of Contrition is recited.

    2.A first prayer is recited in the first large account.

    3. In each of the following three small beads, a Hail Mary is recited.

    4. A glory is recited before the next big count.

    5. The first mystery of the rosary of that day is announced and a Our Father is recited.

    6. In each of the next ten small beads (a dozen) a Hail Mary is recited while reflecting on the mystery.

    7. A glory is recited after the ten Hail Marys. You can also say the Fatima prayer.

    8. Each of the following decades is recited in the same way: announcing the corresponding mystery, reciting an Our Father, ten Hail Marys and a glory while meditating on the mystery.

    9.When the fifth mystery has been concluded, the rosary usually ends with the prayer of the Litany and the Salve Reina.
