In this small book, I've tried to keep the series' objective of simplicity in mind. It is more difficult, however, to be straightforward in a topic that, even in its pictures, requires the reader to have some competence in the examination of his own thoughts. I am convinced that attempting to simplify the subject of psychology more than is done here will only result in making it incorrect and therefore losing its own purpose. In compiling the book,

I obtained the right and appreciated the chance to incorporate some of the more popular sections from previous books and articles. It is vital to explain this since some people dislike seeing a man repeat himself. When a person has once expressed something about as well as he can say it, there is no need for him to be forced into the pretence. The question, of course, is whether he should not then submit himself to being silent and allowing others to do the rest of the talking.

There is a lot to be said for such a programme. But, if one has the right to print more severe and difficult things, and believes he has something to say that will instruct a larger audience, it seems only fair to allow him to speak in a simpler manner as well, even if everything he says may not have the merit of avoiding the charge of infringing his own copyrights!
