Klitoria trifoliate ( Clitoria ternatea ) evergreen herbaceous flowering plant kind of sort of Klitoria family of Legumes. The species range occupies the entire tropical part of Asia.

Cultivated as a garden ornamental plant sometimes as an indoor plant. It is used as a medicinal plant in scientific and traditional medicine. In Australia it is used for reclamation of coal mine sites.

Although the word ternatea usually translated as trifoliate or triple its origin is connected with the name of the island of Ternate in Indonesia where the species was first discovered. English common names of the clitoris primarily the clitoris of the triple Butterfly pea and pigeon wings. German common plant names are Schmetterlings-Erbse and Schamblume.

Flowers axillary relatively large about 5 cm in diameter. Calyx tubular. Corolla butterfly type with the sail much larger than the other four petals. Coloring the corolla different shades of lilac or blue differs in different varieties The center of the flower is yellow. There are varieties with a double flower shape. The oars and the boat form a dense scallion up to two thirds the diameter of the sail. Pollination is carried out with the help of insects which climb behind the pollen inside this scallop. The pedicel is twisted 180 degrees so the oars with the boat are not in the lower part of the corolla as in other plants with a corolla of this type but in the upper one. Flowering time is from May to September.
