How To Improve Your Acting - Tips For Becoming A Working Actor

Any library or book store is filled with "How To" books designed to help struggling actors with there craft. While many of these contain excellent information, it can be very time consuming. Below I've put together a list of the top tips any actor should know.

Learning How To Improve Your Acting:

Just do it: Acting is a skill that's best leaned by doing and practice. Reading what to do will only help you so much. I suggest taking a class or auditing for community theatre as a great place to get your feet wet.

Listen/react: Listening and reacting honestly is the hall mark of any great actor. Try not to rehearse your reactions. Simple listen to what you're scene partner is saying. Then respond with the first reaction that comes to you. The goal is to find the truth in the scene.

Don't think: It's easy to be in your "head" when performing. Usually your first instinct is the best, most honest one. Sometimes responses or reactions that seem inappropriate will come up. Don't try to hide it, just go for it. Many times a great new discovery will be the result.

Breath: this helps with stage fright as well as keeping you grounded. If you're feeling nervous or overwhelmed, take a few minutes and breathe deeply. Your character will be better for it.

Scene partner: The most important person in any scene is your scene partner. The focus should always be on them, not you. By giving to them, they will intern give back to you and your scene will come alive.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. There is so much to learn and understand when it comes to acting. Most actors continue to study and learn throughout there entire career.
