من الحيوانات الثّدييّة، وهو أكبر أنواع الحيوانات التي تعيش على كوكب الأرض، وينتمي إلى رتبة الحيتانيّات التي تضمّ أيضاً الدّلافين، وخنازير البحر، ويجب التمييز بين الحيتان والدّلافين التي تحمل اسم حوت مثل الحوت القاتل، والحوت الطّيار، فهي تصنيفياََ تُعدّ من الدلافين خلافاََ لما يوحي به اسمها. تنتشر الحيتان في جميع بحار ومحيطات العالم باستثناء بحر قزوين، وبحر آرال، وهي تنحدر من ثدييات بريّة يُعتقَد أنّها انتقلت إلى الماء قبل ما يقارب 50 مليون عام فأجسامها انسيابيّة، ولها زعانف ذيليّة وظهريّة تتنفّس الحيتان بواسطة الرّئتين، ويدخل الهواء الجويّ إليهما من خلال فتحة النّفث التي توجد على قمة الرّأس، وللحيتان جهاز تنفسيّ فريد من نوعه يسمح لها بالبقاء تحت الماء فتراتٍ طويلةً
