DOS是Disk Operating System的与平台无关的首字母缩写，最初由IBM引入System / 360大型机，后来成为流行的基于磁盘的操作系统家族的通用缩写，用于基于x86的IBM PC兼容产品。 DOS主要由Microsoft的MS-DOS和以PC DOS命名的IBM重命名版本，两者均于1981年推出。后来其他制造商的兼容系统是DR DOS（自1988年由Digital Research出售后，后来出售给Novell，然后Caldera，Lineo，最后是DeviceLogics），ROM-DOS（自1989年起由Datalight发行），PTS-DOS（自1993年起由Paragon Technology和PhysTechSoft发行），嵌入式DOS（由通用软件发行），FreeDOS（1998年）和RxDOS。在1981年至1995年之间，MS-DOS主导了IBM PC兼容市场。
