The Period of PURPLE Crying

The Period of PURPLE Crying mobile application includes (1) a 10 minute video about normal infant crying and dangers of shaking a baby, (2) a 17 minute video on strategies for soothing a crying baby and coping with soothing that doesn’t work, and (3) a 9 page e-booklet that summarizes that Period of PURPLE Crying information.

The Period of PURPLE Crying is a way for parents and caregivers to understand and recognize normal infant crying, strategies to cope with infant crying and the dangers of shaking a baby in response to frustration. The Period of PURPLE Crying is a program of the National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome. It is based on more than 50 years of research on normal infant crying and its relation as the #1 trigger for shaken baby syndrome by Dr. Ronald G. Barr, developmental pediatrician and researcher, and other scientists.

The Period of PURPLE Crying mobile application is provided to parents following the birth of a new baby in a growing number of hospitals, pediatric practices, home visiting programs and public health offices.
