Its events are about 500 pages in each of France and Britain. It begins precisely at the famous Louvre Museum when an American scientist called Dr. Robert Langdon, Professor of Religious Symbolism at Harvard University, is summoned in the aftermath of a murder in the Louvre Museum, of one of the museum's curators, amid mysterious circumstances, while he was in Paris to deliver a lecture within his scientific field. Langdon discovers mysteries about the existence of a sacred secret organization that spanned hundreds of years, and among its prominent members was the scientist, discoverer of gravity Isaac Newton and the scientist painter Leonardo da Vinci. Most of the novel revolves around the inventions and artworks of Da Vinci. Langdon and the French beauty, Sophie Nouveau, a code-breaking expert - who later turns out to have a major role in the novel - discovered a series of interesting and exciting puzzles that call for reviewing history to decipher its mysteries amid a fierce pursuit of members of a Catholic organization seeking to obtain the secret.

The excitement in the issuance of this novel comes to the point of preventing her from entering several countries, including the Vatican, which strongly objected to the contents of the novel, because it deals with the relationship of Christ with Mary Magdalene in a manner contrary to what is mentioned in the holy books. The novel was also banned from entering some European and Arab countries, such as Lebanon and Jordan.

The title of the novel, among other things, refers to the fact that Sauniere's body was found in the Denon Pavilion at the Louvre Museum naked and placed one of Leonardo da Vinci's famous paintings, the Vitruvian Man, and next to him wrote a mysterious letter and painted a five-pointed star on his stomach with his blood. The interpretation of the letters hidden within Leonardo da Vinci's most famous work (which has a relationship with the concept of the sacred female) and including the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper clearly participates in solving the mystery.
