On this page, AFTE publishes periodic updates of blocked websites in Egypt, including the circumstances related to the blocking and classifications of the sites that have been blocked.

Monitoring methodology

The Foundation relied on the (OONI) tool of the Tor Project, which is an observatory and free software that works as a network to detect, monitor and interfere with the traffic of data on the Internet. The tool offers tests to ensure website blocking, in addition to a range of other network tests. It also allows the results of tests conducted by its users to be published. The organization compared the results obtained through the tool with the results of other tests published by users from Egypt.

The Foundation has tested the accessibility of the blocked websites through a variety of internet service providers in Egypt. The Foundation used the Tor browser, to ensure that the sites work from outside Egypt.

The Foundation contacted users - either directly or via social networks - from various communication networks to ensure that they could access the blocked websites. We have also followed up on users' posts on social networks that report their inability to access certain websites.
