Kratos was a Spartan captain of the troop who climbed his career quickly. Initially he had only 50 troops under his command, then that number grew to thousands of troops. After becoming a general, he won many wars. At that time he also acquired much of the booty and treasure in his adventures of being a general of the Spartan army.

Along with his experience in battle, Kratos became a brutal man and thirsty for war. Only his wife dared to question his motives and goals, but he answered that it was all for the glory of the Spartans. Then his wife denied Kratos, and he said that Kratos did so for Kratos's own ambition in his penchant for war.

At one time, the Spartans fought with the barbarians of the East who were known for their ferocity and savagery. The Spartan troops lost in number and strength of troops, this was the bitter defeat Kratos experienced during the war. At a moment of desperation to be killed by a barbarian army leader, Kratos shouts for Ares the god of war. Kratos promised to be Ares's servant if he was given help to defeat his enemy in the battle. Ares grants Kratos an appeal, and Ares gives a pair of Blades of Chaos weapons. With the help, Kratos cut off the head of the barbarian troop leader using the weapon giving the Ares.

Kratos serves Ares faithfully, he terrorizes every region and makes a mess with the name of Ares the god of war. Unbeknownst to Kratos, Ares trapped him to slaughter his own family in a temple located in a village whose inhabitants were followers of Athens. Upon realizing that he had slaughtered his beloved wife and daughter, he immediately condemned Ares's cunning, and declared that he stopped being a servant of the god of war. Kratos left his family's remains in the temple of the devotee of Athens who was also the place where he slaughtered the family unintentionally. In front of the burning temple, Kratos was punished for the brutal action. His whole body was covered in the ashes of his burning family, and made the skin of white Kratos as pale as a full moon. That's when he was known as Ghost of Sparta.
