Minecraft Beta & Preview 1.21.80.25, released on April 3, 2025, brings a new twist to the game with the introduction of the Happy Ghast as a flying mount and the long-awaited Vibrant Visuals mode. This article details all the new features, changes, and experimental features in this release that are transforming the Minecraft gameplay experience.
Happy Ghast: Minecraft's New Flying Mount
The Happy Ghast is one of the most exciting additions to Minecraft in years, giving players the ability to soar through the game’s skies with up to four friends at once. This friendly creature represents a complete reinvention of the fearsome Nether mob.
Happy Ghast Features
The Happy Ghast is a flying mount with impressive capabilities:
- Can carry up to four players simultaneously when equipped with a harness
- Attracted to snowballs and harnesses (only when not equipped)
- Don't panic when taking damage
- Slowly regenerates health, with accelerated regeneration during rain, snow, or when flying at the same height as clouds
- It has protective glasses that lower when assembled, indicating that it is ready to be controlled.
- The first player to mount controls the Happy Ghast, sitting in the front, just above the creature's face.
- Other players are positioned on the sides of the Happy Ghast in a clockwise direction from the "pilot"
Behavior and Control
When there are no mounted players, the Happy Ghast roams within a 64 block radius of its starting position. If it is wearing a harness, this radius is reduced to 32 blocks. Upon detecting players on top of it, the Happy Ghast stops moving and aligns itself with the nearest horizontal cardinal direction.
If players dismount in mid-air, the Happy Ghast will descend towards the ground before roaming around again. When mounted, the third-person camera zooms out to provide a better view.
Ghastling: How to Get and Breed Your Own Happy Ghast
The Ghastling is the young version of the Happy Ghast and represents the first stage to obtain this incredible flying mount.
How to Get a Ghastling
There are two ways to obtain a Ghastling:
- Natural Method: Spawns from a Dried Ghast block that has been continuously flooded for approximately 20 minutes.
- Command: Can be summoned using the command "/summon happy_ghast ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ minecraft:spawn_baby"
Ghastling Behavior
After spawning, the Ghastling will attempt to follow:
- Players within a 16 block radius, or
- A non-aquatic adult passive mob (and some neutral mobs) within a 16 block radius
If there are no suitable players or mobs nearby, the Ghastling will remain idle within a 32 block radius of its starting position. It can be lured and fed with snowballs, and will grow into a Happy Ghast after approximately 20 minutes (or faster if fed with snowballs).
Dried Ghast: Location and Usage
The Dried Ghast is a new fundamental block for the process of obtaining the Ghastling and, consequently, the Happy Ghast.
How to Find and Breed the Dried Ghast
The Dried Ghast can be:
- Found in Nether Fossil structures
- Crafted with 1 bone block and 8 ghast tears
Transformation Process
When flooded, the Dried Ghast goes through 3 stages over the course of approximately 20 minutes until it finally spawns a Ghastling mob. During this process:
- Makes sounds and displays particles depending on the stage
- If mined during the flood, it returns to the "dry" state, regardless of the stage reached.
- Gradually returns to the initial "dry" state when it is no longer flooded, using the same time scale
Harness: The Harness for Riding the Happy Ghast
The Harness is a new essential item for those who want to use the Happy Ghast as a mount.
Manufacturing and Features
- Can be crafted with 3 leather, 2 glass blocks and 1 wool block.
- The harness will be the same color as the wool block used in its manufacture.
- Can be re-dyed to change its color
- Can only be equipped on a Happy Ghast
- Allows up to 4 players to ride the Happy Ghast
- Can be removed from the Happy Ghast using shears, but only when no player is riding it.
