What is café racer?

A Cafe Racer motorcycle is a customized motorcycle based on an existing model or one that has been specifically built from scratch to mirror the style and feel. The goal is to make the bike more lightweight, stripping the bike down to its bare essentials, to give it better handling and a sportier appearance. Mods usually take the form of a café racer seat, commonly referred to as a “bum stopper”. And this, like the racing seat it takes its style cue from, prevents the rider slipping backwards during hard acceleration.

Let’s start by picking the right bike up front to avoid expensive mistakes down the track.Not everybody who read it agreed with the content, but when it comes to style, there are several different schools of taste.

Dirt bike

Scrambler is an old term for a dirt bike up to about 650cc capacity that raced on off-road tracks with low jumps (by today's standards) and various obstacles. The old scramblers died off in the mid-70s, replaced by the far superior modern motocross bike with more power, lighter weight and longer-travel suspension.

Today’s production versions, of course, deliver all that fresh out of the box and appeal for their retro style, decent, modern performance, on/off-road versatility (although few profess to be serious off-roaders), upright ease of riding and middle-ground value – while still offering plenty of customizing potential.
