The devices have to share the same wireless connection. In the simplest use case the phone can create the hotspot. The creator of the hotspot can connect other devices which may wish to share files. You can send files and entire folders without having to compress or anything, the folders will simply arrive to the destination with content intact.

An ip address and port is provided by the device intending to share. The recieving device simply needs those credentials and sharing files will take place. Phone and tablet users can simply scan qr codes provided by the sending device and skip manual entry of credentials. Remember, this app works excellently well with Wi-Fi enabled computers especially laptops. You can share files between your computer and phone sharing the same Wi-Fi (which you can create through hotspot).
