Perfect Upcycled Drawer Pet Bed

Turn an older drawer into a stylish bed for your fur baby.

We e have a new addition to our fur family and this time it’s not a dog! Yes, we decided that we are more than just a three-dog family. It was time to add a feline to the mix. Our little kitten is a tabby named Hermione and our boys (not so much our dogs) adore her. We couldn’t let little Hermione just sleep on an old blanket, so we upcycled an old drawer into a fabulous bed fit for a little princess.

Supplies

old drawer

4-¾ inch hardwood dowels cut to 3 inches long

4-¼ inch hanger bolts

spray paint

4 table leg foot pads (optional)

4-¼ inch tee nuts

2 ¼ inch nuts

wrench (not pictured)

hammer (not pictured)

The hardest part of this project is making the feet for the bed. You can purchase pre-made furniture feet, but at five dollars or more per leg we felt that was way too much to spend on an upcycle project. Making your own furniture feet will cost you less than five dollars total for all four legs.

Paint the drawer and legs. Let it dry.

In order to make your own table legs, you will need to get hanger bolts and tee nuts. They are available in the hardware section in most home improvement stores. The hanger bolts come two in a package and tee nuts come four in a package.

Drill holes in the legs for the hanger bolts to fit in. The hole needs to be deep enough so only the blunt end, threaded part of the bolt is showing. Thread the two nuts onto the hanger bolt, keeping them right next to each other. Use a wrench to tighten them against each other, so that the tension locks them in place. Screw the bolts into the legs manually using the wrench on the upper nut (which is held in place by the lower one).Remove the nuts by loosening the top one first and they easily come right off. Repeat with the other legs.

Pre-drill 1/4 holes in each corner of the bottom of the drawer. Place the tee nut in the hole and use a hammer to secure the cleats in place. Screw in the legs.

The best part of this project is that it's totally adaptable to any size pet. The next time you see an old dresser sitting on a curb with a free sign on it, snag it! You'll have the best pet bed in town.
