Certainly life is living on a loan that must be pay back but the demise of an Islamic scholar of international repute like Sheikh Ja’afar Mahmud Adam who died in the early hours of Friday 13th April, 2007 while leading the early Morning Prayer (Subhi) at the Dorayi Juma’at Mosque in Kano is shocked and a great loss not only to Nigerian Muslim ummah but to the entire Muslim world.

Late Mallam Jafar, a graduate of the prestigious Islamic University Madina, kingdom of Saudi Arabia would continue to remain fresh in the minds of the ummah because he was a man remarkable in several respect, he was intelligent, friendly, good mannered, understanding, amiable, humble, fearless vanguard of Islam and masses and above all God fearing. He remained one of the few Islamic scholars that are decent, reliable, trustworthy and credible opposition to all anti-Islamic policies of government at the three rung local, state and national as well as international scene. His sincerity, frankness and fearlessness in telling truth to power made him far above his contemporaries.

Sheikh Jaafar was such an excellent Islamic scholar; he never reduced himself to ethnic or tribal differences. He also committed his entire life to the propagation of Islam within and outside Nigeria.

Mallam Jaafar, brings benefit to many in several ways. His annual Ramadan Tafsir (Qur’anic commentary) in the famous Indimi Mosque along Damboa road in Maiduguri was remarkable. His Tafsir is the talk of the town and attracted large crowd. People migrated from far and near to listen to his Tafsir. He also led the Tahajjud at the last ten days of the Holy month of Ramadan. Late Mallam Ja'afar also presented many papers on diverse topics in Maiduguri for more than a decade in places like, University of Maiduguri, School of Nursing, University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Ramat Polytechnic Maiduguri amongst others. He also delivered Tafsir for women in the famous Indimi Mosque in Maiduguri. Late Sheikh Jaafar Mahmud Adam’s tremendous contribution to scholarship did not left even the inmate in custody. It was late Sheik Ja’afar Mahmud Adam who initiated the visitation to prison yards in Maiduguri by the Muslim ummah especially during the Holy-Month of Ramadan. He led the Muslim ummah to deliver lecture and donated clothes, foodstuffs which the Muslim ummah contributed. The visits to prison yard especially during Ramadan fast have since become annual events. Inmates in the Maximum Security Prison and New prison Maiduguri will greatly missed Sheikh Ja’afar Mahmud Adam, Islamic scholar of repute. The loss of Sheikh Ja’afar Mahmud Adam will be felt for several reasons. As Sheikh Ja’afar left this sinful world to the great beyond without even a farewell thereby throwing the Muslim world into deep mourning despair and sorrow. May Allah broaden his entrance into the most elevated and choicest place in paradise Firdausi, Amen.
