The UEFA Europa League, formerly UEFA Cup or UEFA Cup, is a football competition for European clubs. It is currently the second most important championship in European football, behind only the UEFA Champions League.

The precursor of the UEFA Cup, the Cities Fairs Cup, was established on 18 April 1955. In 1971 the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) took over the organization and changed the format and name of the competition for the UEFA Cup . However, it is not considered a new version of the competition and its titles are not equivalent to the current championship.

The tournament has a somewhat different format from the UEFA Cup, and now has 48 participating teams, divided into 12 groups, with the top two in each group joining the eight third-placed Champions League groups.

As is already the case in South America, UEFA has decided to include a berth for the European Champions League in the next edition of the UEFA Champions League, only taking place from the 2014-15 season. The biggest champion of the tournament is Sevilla with 5 titles, is also the only team to win 3 tournaments in a row, the last title was won in the 2015-16 season.
