Things Fall Apart

Everything is collapsing (original title: Things Fall Apart; title of the first French translation: The world is collapsing) is a novel by the Nigerian writer Chinua Achebe.

Published in 1958, the novel tells of pre-colonial life in south-eastern Nigeria and the arrival of the British at the end of the 19th century. It is considered to be the archetype of the modern African novel in English, one of the first to be acclaimed by world critics. The book is studied in schools across Africa and is widely read and studied in English speaking countries around the world. In 1962 this first Achebe novel was published in the UK by William Heinemann Ltd. Everything collapses is the first work in the Heinemann African Writers Series.

Through the fate of Okonkwo, a notable of his clan, Chinua Achebe evokes the cultural shock that the arrival of the British at the Igbos at the end of the 19th century and the colonization of Nigeria by the British represented for the natives . Almost cut off from the outside, the inhabitants of the equatorial forest could imagine a world in their image, made up of multiple gods, ancestor worship, rites and taboos. The emergence of Europeans and their religion, Christianity, upsets all traditional beliefs, hence the title of the novel (taken from a poem by Yeats). However, Chinua Achebe does not idealize the past. It is because his best friend was the victim of a human sacrifice that the son of Okonkwo breaks with the practices of his village, thus opening a breach in the unity of the clan.

Everything collapses had a sequel, No Longer at Ease (en) (1960), originally written as the second part of a larger work with Arrow of God (en) (1964). Achebe claims that his two later novels A Man of the People (en) (1966) and Anthills of the Savannah (en) (1987), although they do not present the descendants of Okonkwo, are the spiritual successors of the previous novels from the chronicle of African history.
