Penguin Rush

Back in 2009, whilst hiking through the mountains of Tierra del Fuego, we came across an old man, wandering on the path and muttering under his breath. “Penguins…” he rasped, his acrid breath just powerful enough to beckon the two of us closer. Fearing for this old man’s health, we sat with him for a time near a large boulder, offering what water and trail mix we had; clearly, it had been some time since the poor man had seen any comfort, and we waited while he regained his strength. At last, he looked up, his gray eyes piercing in a sad way, and said, “Thank you for this kindness. I have been in these mountains for longer than I should be able to remember. In my youth I was a traveler and a scientist, but my life changed after an expedition to Antarctica. The Penguins there… “ he stopped and wheezed, clearing his throat. “Excuse me, my party, we were overtaken by the Penguins. It was all the few of us could do but escape in a small boat and head back for the main land. One by one my companions fell, but I alone survived the ordeal. I survived in these mountains for years to warn others just like you! Warn them, yes… never pick up a Penguin you don’t know.” The two of us stood there aghast. After a time the old man stood, as if bracing himself on a creaky invisible chair. Without a word he turned and shuffled down the dusty path toward the setting sun. We never saw that old man again. But an idea was born that strange night in the mountains. An idea that would become… PENGUIN RUSH I: THE BREAK OF DAWN!
