Stephen Ray "Stevie" Vaughan - commonly referred to as SRV - (October 3, 1954 - August 27, 1990), is an American guitarist, singer and songwriter. Vaughan won several Grammy awards during his lifetime and posthumously, including 'Best Rock Instrumental Performance' and 'Best Contemporary Blues Album'. When he was in junior high school, he began playing in several garage bands, which sometimes landed performances at local nightclubs. By the time he was 17, he had dropped out of high school to concentrate on playing music. Vaughan's first real band was Kobra, who played clubs and bars in Austin in the mid 70s. After the group's death, he formed the Triple Threat in 1975.

Triple Threat also features Jackie Newhouse bassist, drummer Chris Layton, and vocalist Lou Ann Barton. After several years of Texas playing bars and clubs, Barton left the band in 1978. The group decided to continue performing under the name Double Trouble, inspired by Otis Rush's song of the same name, Vaughan being the band's vocalist. For the next few years, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble play the Austin area, becoming one of the most popular bands in Texas.

In 1982, the band played Montreux Festival and their performance has attracted the attention of David Bowie and Jackson Browne. After Double Trouble's performance, Bowie asks Vaughan to play on the upcoming album, while Browne offers her leisure time group at the studio in Los Angeles, Downtown, both of which offer acceptance. Stevie Ray put the guitar tunes for what became a Dance Bowie album Dance in late 1982. Shortly thereafter, John Hammond, Sr landed Vaughan and Double Trouble a recording contract with Epic, and the band recorded their debut album in less than a week at Downtown. The debut album Vaughan, Texas Flood, was released in the summer of 1983, a few months after Let's Bowie's Dance appeared. Alone, Let's Dance gained Vaughan quite a bit of attention, but Texas The flood was a blues blockbuster success; gained positive responses in both blues and rock publications, reached number 38 on the charts, and crossed over to rock radio station albums. Bowie offered Vaughan the role of guitarist for the 1983 stadium tour, but he refused, preferring to play with Double Trouble. Vaughan and Double Trouble set out on a successful tour and quickly recorded their second album, Can not Stand Weather, which was released in May 1984.
