Swipe up/down/left/right to match hiragana characters with their matching romaji (roman alphabet characters). Choose between matching hiragana to romaji, or romaji to hiragana. Set the level to match appropriate difficulty, or allow the app to slowly introduce characters as you progress. More interesting than regular flashcards, if nothing else.
