Some characters feature the ability to activate special mode by inflicting the special techniques which enhances their status and gives them new abilities. It also features several items, like shuriken and kunai.

he game features an arcade style story mode. Although the game loosely covers the events in the original manga from the Introduction arc up to the Invasion of Konoha arc, the game's twelve stories are meant to depict the events from different characters' perspectives and as the result some of them deviates from the original source. Each stories consist of up to six battles divided by dialogues in a manga style display, one of many homages to its source material.

In a new addition to the franchise, gamers will also have the ability to create and customize their own ninja dream squads to battle opponents or trade players' profiles via wireless connectivity. To further maximize the character power-up feature, players can form different team combinations to awaken hidden skills that lie within each group. Depending on the combinations, special team-based skills can be unleashed. Gamers can also earn power-up points toward upgrading each character's attack, defense, chakra, speed, and even special abilities.

The game immediately breaks ground with 23 characters, a unique story, and a new ad-hoc multi-player function. The plot of the story takes you on a ride through the mysterious Mugenjo tower that has recently been summoned into Konoah village, where several of the village's ninja have been sent to explore and investigate. The journey is packed with battles, mini-games, a leveling system, collectible items, a new mission-powered ranking system, team mode, and skill sets.
