Claude Cowork and Chat Merge Into One Claude: Docs, Slides, and Design Explained
Anthropic merged Claude Cowork and chat into a single Claude, adding beta Docs and Slides plus in-chat Design. Here's what changed and who gets it first.

Anthropic shipped the update on September 16, 2026, and it rewrites the basic question you ask before starting work in Claude. Cowork and chat are now a single product.

If you've been splitting tasks between the two, that split is gone. Claude Cowork merge means the bigger-work tools sit inside the same conversation window you use for quick questions. Docs and Slides are new, and Design now runs inside conversations too. The whole thing rolls out to Pro and Max first over the coming weeks.

What the Claude Cowork Merge Actually Changes

The old arrangement made you decide where a task belonged before you typed anything. Chat covered questions and short exchanges. Cowork held the longer projects and agent-style work. Design lived in its own place for visual jobs.

That decision was the friction. People used both, and what they started in one didn't carry into the other. Anthropic's fix is to stop asking. Claude now reads what a task needs and pulls in the right capability from wherever it's needed. Context, skills, and connectors you already set up follow you into any conversation.

So the practical change is smaller than the feature list suggests, and bigger than it sounds. You stop managing locations. You open Claude, describe the job, and let it sort out whether that means a quick answer, a document, or a slide deck.

Does any of your existing work move? No.

Your Cowork history stays put. Chats, projects, artifacts, connectors, and skills are all where you left them, and the app picks up where you stopped.

Claude Docs Turns a Chat Into a Written Document

Claude Docs is the first of the new Claude new features, and it's in beta on paid plans. Ask for a document and you write it together with Claude inside the conversation rather than bouncing between a chat window and a separate editor.

The useful part is the back and forth. You ask for a draft, Claude produces one, you edit directly in the doc, and you can leave a comment on a specific line for Claude to act on. That loop stays in one place instead of two.

Anything you build lands at a single shareable link. Open it on your phone, select an element and move it, or tell Claude what to change. For anyone who writes the same weekly report or client summary on a schedule, the doc lives where the conversation that made it lives.

Claude Slides Drafts Decks and Exports to PowerPoint

Claude Slides joins Docs in beta for paid tiers. Ask for a presentation and Claude drafts the slides from the same conversation that produced your report.

That shared origin is the point. If a report and its slides come out of one thread, the slides already match the numbers in the report. You don't rebuild the deck from a summary someone wrote afterward. You present straight from Claude, adjust a slide, or export as PowerPoint or PDF when the format has to travel.

The example Anthropic uses is a weekly report due at noon. You ask Claude what moved in the pipeline last week, tell it to write the report the way your team always does, flag anything that slipped, and put the highlights in five slides. If something's unclear, Claude asks before guessing. You can check progress from your phone on the way to the office, and by the time you sit down, the doc and deck are both waiting.

Claude Design Now Works Inside Your Conversations

Claude Design is the third piece, and it changed shape rather than arriving new. It used to sit on its own for visual work. Now it works inside conversations, so Design skills are available from any thread. If you already use Design on its own, it keeps working as before, so nobody loses the old setup.

The combined behavior matters for mixed jobs. A slide deck with custom graphics, a document with a diagram, a quick visual asset for a post: all of that can draw on Design without you switching apps. Select an element and move it, or describe the change you want. The same shareable link covers everything you make across Docs, Slides, and Design.

Checking In, Permissions, and Who Gets Claude First

Claude update September 2026 also touches how the agent checks in with you. By default, Claude asks before taking an action. If you'd rather let it keep working and only surface something when it needs a closer look, there's a setting for that. Either way you keep the final say.

Rollout order is specific. Pro and Max plans get the merge first, in the Claude app on web, desktop, and mobile, across the coming weeks for both existing and new users on those plans. There's nothing to switch on. Team and Free plans follow soon after.

Enterprise admins aren't dropped into the change blind. Anthropic says admins will hear from the company at least 30 days before anything shifts for their organizations, and admins choose when to turn Docs, Slides, and Design on. If your company runs Claude under an enterprise plan, that lead time is the window to test what the merge means for your own connector and skill setups.

What This Means If You Already Use Claude Daily

The merge rewards people who were doing the most with Claude before. If you kept a Cowork project going for months, all of it survived the change. If you mostly typed short questions into chat, you don't have to do anything differently.

The part worth testing is the handoff. Start a report, ask for slides from the same thread, and see whether the deck matches without rework. That's the workflow the whole update was built around, and it's where the time savings show up or don't.

For heavier users, the biggest quality-of-life shift is not having to pick a door. The question "should this go in Cowork or chat?" is retired. One less decision before you start is a small thing on its own, and it adds up across a workday.

Anthropic says the full list of capabilities is in its Help Center, which is worth a look if you're mapping the new layout onto an existing team workflow.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Claude Cowork merge cost anything extra?

No. The merge rolls out to existing and new Pro and Max users at no additional cost, and there's nothing to enable. Docs, Slides, and Design sit in beta on paid plans, with Enterprise admins controlling when those turn on for their organizations.

Can I still use Claude Design as a standalone tool?

Yes. If you use Claude Design on its own, it keeps working as before. The change adds Design into conversations rather than replacing the standalone version.

When do Team and Free plans get the new Claude?

Anthropic says Team and Free plans will follow soon after the Pro and Max rollout, which runs over the coming weeks. Enterprise organizations get a minimum 30 days' notice before anything changes for them.

Do PowerPoint exports keep the formatting?

Claude Slides lets you present straight from Claude, edit directly, or download as PowerPoint or PDF. The deck is built from the same conversation as your source document, so the two start out consistent before you touch a slide.
