বাঙালির বংশ পদবীর ইতিহাস খুব বেশি প্রাচীন নয়। মধ্যযুগে সামন্তবাদী সমাজ ব্যবস্থার ফলে পরবর্তীতে বৃটিশ আমলে চিরস্থায়ী বন্দোবস্তের সমান্তরালে বাঙালির পদবীর বিকাশ ঘটেছে বলে মনে হয়। অধিকাংশ ব্যক্তি নামের শেষে একটি পদবী নামক পুচ্ছ যুক্ত হয়ে আছে। যেমন উপাধি, উপনাম কিংবা বংশসূচক নামকে সাধারণ ভাবে পদবী বলা হয়। বাঙালির মূল নামের শেষে বংশ ,পরিবার, পেশা, বসতিস্থান ইত্যাদির পরিচয়বাহী উপনাম ব্যবহারের রীতি প্রচলিত রয়েছে।

সামন্ততান্ত্রিক পদবীর সঙ্গে জড়িয়ে আছে অনেক ক্ষেত্রেই জমি ও হিসাব সংক্রান্ত পদবী। তবে এই সমস্ত পদবীর বেশির ভাগই বংশ পরস্পরায় চলে আসলে ও বর্তমানে পদবীর সমাজ গত মূল্য নেই বললেই চলে। ইতিহাসের দিন বিচার করলে দেখা যাবে পদবী অধিকাংশ ক্ষেত্রেই বাঙালি মুসলমানের পরিচয় ও মর্যাদাকে নিয়ন্ত্রণ করেছে।

সুতরাং পদবী মাহাত্ম্য ও তার তাৎপর্যের আড়ালে লুকিয়ে রয়েছে জাত ও শ্রেণী চেতনা। বাঙালি মুসলমান সমাজের একটা বড় সময় পার হয়েছে এই মনস্তাত্তিক দ্বন্দ্বে, যে দ্বন্দ্বে অঙ্গার হয়েছে বাঙালি হিন্দু সমাজ। তবে হিন্দু সমাজের মতো মুসলমান সমাজের মনস্তত্বে পদবীর কৌলীন্য বড় একটা প্রসার লাভ করতে পারেনি ইসলামের মৌলিক আদর্শের কারণেই, যেখানে রক্ত ও বর্ণে সকল মানুষকে সমান মর্যাদা দান করা হয়েছে।
