Japanese tattoo style is probably one of the most influential styles on modern tattoos and has a very long history. Tattoos in Japan extend back to the Yayoi period (around 300 BC - 300 AD) tattoos have a spiritual meaning and they also serve as status symbols. In the Kofun period (300-600 AD), they begin to be used as a sign for criminals, therefore with negative connotations.

Although, what really affects the Japanese tattoo style are the floating world pictures (called ukiyo-e in Japanese) which are basically wooden block prints.
