What are the Vedas?

The Vedas ("Knowledge" in Sanskrit) were originated in the Indian Sub-continent and their origin dates back to 1600 BC.

The Vedas are composed of four collections of mantras (Samhitas) which are associated with a particular priest or aspect of ritual: Rig Veda (Wisdom of the Verses), Sama Veda (Wisdom of the Chants), Yajur Veda (Wisdom of the Sacrificial Formulas), and Atharva Veda (Wisdom of the Atharvan Priests).

All of them are attributed to as ‘Chaturveda’.

Each Veda has been subclassified into four major text types: Samhitas (most ancient layer of text in the Vedas, consisting of mantras, hymns, prayers, and benedictions), Aranyakas  (which constitute the philosophy on the ritual, sacrifice, and ceremonies), Brahmanas (which in turn has the commentary on hymns of four Vedas), Upanishads (the texts discussing meditation, philosophy and spiritual knowledge), and Upasanas, (the one that focuses on worship).

Especially, the Rigveda which is one of the four canonical sacred texts of Hinduism known as the Vedas is the book of the oldest form of the Sanskrit mantras.

It is organized in books, known as Mandalas and each Mandala consists of hymns called Sukta.

What is the Yajurveda?

The Yajurveda is one of the four Vedas.

The Yajurveda (derived from the roots yaj, to sacrifice or, worship, and vid, to know) is the Knowledge of Sacrifice or Sacrificial Texts and Formulas as distinguished from the Rigveda or Knowledge of Recited Praise, the Sâmaveda or Knowledge of Chanted Hymns, and the Atharva or Brahmaveda which is the Knowledge of Prayer, Charm, and Spells.

It contains liturgical texts used during various important Hindu rituals.

There are two major samhitas, or collections, the Black and White.

The White Yajurveda, translated here, focuses on the liturgy, whereas the Black Yajurveda includes more explanatory material about the rituals.
