Sheikh Mahmoud Ali Al-Banna (December 17, 1926 - July 20, 1985) is an Egyptian Quran reciter and is considered one of the prominent figures in this field. He was born in the village of Shubra Bus, Shebin El-Kom Center, Menoufia Governorate. He memorized the Holy Qur’an in the Qur’an book at the hands of Sheikh Musa Al-Mantash, and completed its memorization when he was eleven years old. Then he moved to the city of Tanta to study Sharia sciences at the Ahmadi Mosque, and received readings there at the hands of Imam Ibrahim bin Salam Al-Maliki.

Joining the radio

Sheikh Al-Banna came to Cairo in 1945, and began to spread his fame there. He studied the sciences of Maqamat there under Sheikh Al-Hujjah in that field, Darwish Al-Hariri. He was chosen as reciter for the Young Muslims Association in 1947, and he opened all the celebrations held by the association. In 1948 AD, Ali Maher Pasha, Prince Abdul Karim Al-Khattabi, and a number of senior notables present at the association’s ceremony, listened to him and asked him to join Egyptian radio. Sheikh Al-Banna joined Egyptian Radio in 1948, and his first live recitation was in December 1948 from Surat Hud, and within a few years he became one of the most famous reciters in Egypt.

Ambassador of the Qur’an

He was chosen as reciter of the Ain al-Hayat Mosque at the end of the 1940s, then of the Imam al-Rifai Mosque in the 1950s, and moved to read at the Ahmadi Mosque in Tanta in 1959. He remained there until 1980, when he took over the recitation at the Imam al-Hussein Mosque until his death. He left a huge wealth of recordings to the radio, in addition to the recited Qur’an that he recorded in 1967, the recited Qur’an that he recorded on the Egyptian radio, and the recited Qur’an that he recorded for radio stations in Saudi Arabia and the Emirates. Sheikh Al-Banna visited many countries of the world, and read the Qur’an in the Two Holy Mosques, the Holy Mosque, the Umayyad Mosque, and most Arab countries, and he visited many European countries, including Germany in 1978. Sheikh Al-Banna was one of the fighters for the establishment of the Readers’ Syndicate, and he was chosen as deputy president when the union was established in 1984. .

Departure and honor

After a long journey of giving, Sheikh Mahmoud Ali Al-Banna died on Dhul-Qi’dah 3, 1405 AH / July 20, 1985 AD. He was buried in his shrine attached to his mosque in his village, Shubra Bus. The former Egyptian President (Mohamed Hosni Mubarak) awarded him a medal called the Medal of Sciences and Arts in 1990.
