Asia is the largest and most populated continent in the Earth, mostly in the eastern and northern halves. It covers 8.7% of the total land surface (or 30% of its land area, specifically 44,579 million km ²), with approximately 4,462 billion people, and houses 60% of the world's current population. According to definitions provided by the British Encyclopedia, the National Geographic Society is equivalent to 4/5 of Eurasia - with the western part occupied by Europe - east of the Suez Canal, east of the Ural Mountains and south of the Caucasus Mountains, the Caspian Sea and the Black Sea. It is bordered to the east by the Pacific Ocean, to the south by the Indian Ocean, and to the north by the Arctic Ocean. Due to its size and diversity, Asia - a spatial name dating back to the ancient classical era - "is the most common cultural concept between regions and people of a homogeneous physical entity. There are significant differences in Asia, both within and outside Asia, with regard to ethnic groups, cultures, environments, the economy, historical relationships and government systems.
