"Chibi Maruko-chan", a third-year elementary school student who spent her childhood in the Irie district of Shimizu City, Shizuoka Prefecture (currently Shimizu Ward, Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture) in the 1970s, is a projection of the author Momoko Sakura, and unfolds with her family and friends. It is a comedy manga about everyday life. Even in anime, depending on the TV special, the period setting may be adjusted to the time of broadcasting, but basically it is unified to the period setting from 1974 to 1975. In the author's other work "Kojikoji", it is treated as a story in the "Kunchan manga world".

In 1989, it won the 13th Kodansha Manga Award for girls.
