The Romance of the Three Kingdoms vividly reproduces the history of nearly a century of political and military struggles from the Yellow Turban Uprising that broke out in the first year of Zhongping to the reunification of the Three Kingdoms in the first year of Taikang.

《三国演义》是中国第一部长篇小说，它与《水浒传》、《西游记》、《红楼梦》一起被公认为中国古典小说四大名著。而很多人认为这是一部文人历史著作，实际上《三国演义》不是文人的独立创作，而是在三国故事长期流传的过程中不断丰富、衍变的基础上，由罗贯中整理加工而成的。

《三国演义》取材于东汉末年和魏、蜀、吴三国的历史，以蜀汉兴亡为主线，生动地再现了从汉灵帝中平元年（184）爆发的黄巾起义到晋武帝太康元年（280）晋统一三国这近百年的政治斗争和军事斗争史。
