Born in Kentucky in 1809, Abraham Lincoln served as the 16th President of the United States.

He is remembered and revered for his emancipation of the slaves after the Civil War, and his leadership during the conflict.

Lincoln came from humble beginnings and was self-educated, but as a young man, was elected to the Illinois State Legislature. Eventually, he became a congressional representative. Lincoln ran for president in 1860 as a member of the Republican party.

He won the election and became president in an age of turmoil. The Civil War began soon after Lincoln entered office, and he held the country together during the difficult period in American history.

Lincoln opposed slavery, and during his presidency, he issued the Emancipation Proclamation to free all slaves.

In 1865, Lincoln was attending a play at the Ford Theatre in Washington, DC when he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth.

He died the next day from his gunshot wounds. Along with George Washington, Lincoln’s place in American history is honoured on President’s Day, which takes place each year on the 3rd Monday of February.
