Ramayana is one of The Major Sanskrit epics of ancient India. It is part of Hindu Itihasa and one of the largest ancient epics in world literature. It consists of nearly 24,000 verses, divided into seven Kand's-"aadi kand, Ayodhya kand, Aranya kand, kishkindha kand, Sundara kand, Lanka Kanda and Uttara kand". In Hindu tradition, it is considered to be the adi-kavya. It shows the life of Rama, the legendary prince of the Kosala Kingdom. It follows his fourteen-year exile to the forest by his father King Dasharatha, on request of his step-mother Kaikeyi. His travels across forests in India with his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana.

In particular, the Ramayana related to north India differs in important respects from that preserved in south India and the rest of southeast Asia.
