BMW was founded in October 1913 by Karl Friedrich Rapp. Initially, this was actually an aircraft engine factory (Bayerische Flugzeug-Werke) based in Milbertshofen, Munich. In 1918, Franz Josef Popp, an Austrian capitalist, officially took over BMW in 1917 and changed its name to BMW AG. After World War I, the Treaty of Versailles (1919) prohibited production of aircraft in Germany. Otto closed the factory and switched to producing steam brakes for trains.

After World War II, BMW was banned by the Allies until 1952. In the East, the BMW factory in Eisenach was under the control of the Awtowelo Group, a state-owned enterprise. Since then BMW vehicles have been branded EMW until 1955.
