Degung is one of the gamelan products developed by the Sundanese people. In literature the term "degung" first appeared in 1879, namely in the dictionary of H.J. Oosting. The word "De gong" (gamelan, Dutch) in this dictionary contains the meaning of "hanging penclon-penclon".

In the past, gamelan degung was only played with gendingan (instrumental). Regent of Cianjur RT. Wiranatakusumah V (1912-1920) forbade degung from using singing (vocals) because it made the atmosphere less serious (rucah). When this regent moved to become regent of Bandung in 1920, the gamelan degung instrument in the Cianjur pavilion was also brought along with his nayaga, led by Idi. Since then, this degung gamelan called Pamagersari has decorated the Bandung pavilions with its songs.
