DEx

DEx is a simple yet powerful app that lets you control your bandwidth. With DEx, you operate your mobile like you drive a car-- adjust your speed to match your needs and remaining fuel. Stop driving at full speed until you run out of gas. Extend your data mileage by watching video, music, and VoIP at lower bitrates. Don’t run out of data, just slow down!

For developers, DEx provides wifi controls that let you emulate different mobile networks on actual devices operating in the real world.

Features and guide

Presets

DEx provides preset bandwidth levels based on video quality. Tap different options to see how changing video quality (bitrates) affects how many minutes of video you can watch with your remaining data.

Quotas

DEx uses your the data usage settings from your built-in Android tools in settings. (Settings → Data Usage)

Receive

Adjust your incoming bandwidth to align your data use with your quality preferences. Running low on data? Slide left to slow down. Want to watch a big game? Slight right for a better picture.

Video-based guide

If you are like most people, video consumes 60-70% of your data budget. So DEx lets you control data by thinking in minutes of video - DEx translates remaining data into video quality and time, terms we can all understand. If I watch video at HD quality, how many minutes do I have left? What if reduce quality a little, how long then?

DEx indicates your device’s max video quality so you won’t set bitrates higher than your device can display.

Send

You can also control your outgoing bandwidth if you need to. This is useful if your operator charges for bandwidth rates at different times of day. Most people shouldn’t need this option.

Wifi controls for developers

Developers-- replicate mobile bandwidth scenarios on your device using wifi. Like the emulator tool, but on an actual device in the real world.

Consumers-- Wifi is usually free or time-based, so our advice is to not use these settings and run at the highest possible bandwidth!

Developer presets

DEx replicates the bandwidth settings available in the emulator-- GSM, GPRS, EDGE, 3G, HSPDA, LTE-- so you can test lower bandwidth conditions using Wifi or 4G on real devices in the real world.

You can also customize and save your own send/receive settings. DEx also indicates when your requested test speed (e.g. LTE) exceeds your wifi link speed.
