About Exercise Borneo - Stroke
Simple exercises intended for stroke victims. Plan, do exercise, upload record
Exercise Borneo - Stroke is a simple app for people who are doing exercises after a stroke. It includes about 30 different exercises drawn from professional physiotherapists with many years of experience. Caroline Adriaanse, who works in Kuching, Sarawak, East Malaysia, is the demonstrator in the video clips.
When starting for the first time, the user is prompted to enter his/her name and ID. These are used to create the file 'Exer_[name]_[ID].txt' which is stored in the /ExerRec/ folder on the phone. All of the exercise records are kept in this plain text file. The user is also asked for a phone number for uploading - e.g. the physiotherapist's number. If the user uploads records (see below), then the name and ID can be used to identify the user to the therapist or to a health record system.
The app has 'Plan exercise', 'Do exercise', 'Upload', 'Help', 'Stop' and 'Future' buttons / functions.
'Plan exercise' allows users to plan an exercise schedule by selecting a date range (from - to), then selecting from the list which exercises to do and how many minutes to do each one every day. 'Save' saves the plan, which should appear in the list on the main screen.
'Do exercise' - each day the app will list those exercises which are in the plan for that day, together with the suggested time. The user can time himself/herself on each exercise with a timer (Start-Stop buttons). To jog the memory the user can play a video of the exercise - the button with the exercise name on it. At the end of the session, the user can save his/her record with the 'Save' button. The just-completed exercises should appear at the end of the list on the main screen (sometimes one has to press one of the language buttons to make the exercises appear).
'Upload' - uploads the exercise record to a SMS phone number of choice (the therapist's number, a SMS gateway to an online Personal Health Record database, a friend's or relative's number, etc), whereby only those entries which have not yet been uploaded are included (tag N for Not sent). The default number is, hopefully, a dummy.
'Help' displays a brief description of the usage of the app.
'Stop' turns off the app.
'Future' is there for future extension.
'English' shows the interface in English.
'Bahasa Melayu' shows the interface in Malay.
'中文 Chinese' shows the interface in Chinese (mostly the simplified form).
The physiotherapy exercises in this app are specifically for stroke victims, which is why 'Stroke' is in the name. To reduce the number of videos, exercises which can be done with either the left or the right side are shown only once; it is up to the user to repeat such exercises for both sides.
Apps for other exercise schemes can be made by re-compiling this with another set of videos.
The app has been developed in Sarawak and Melaka, Malaysia, by HL Seldon, C Adriaanse, A Afzalian and others. It complies with the Malaysian Personal Data Protection Act 2010, http://www.pdp.gov.my/index.php/en/akta-709/personal-data-protection-act-2010
