Norteña music (or simply norteña / norteño) is a genre of regional Mexican music. The accordion and the sixth bass are the most characteristic instruments of the traditional norteño. The genre is popular in both Mexico and the United States, especially among the Mexican and Mexican-American community.
A traditional norteño grouping consists of an accordion and a sixth bass instrumentation (such a combination of these two instruments is known as fara-fara in some regions), with the addition of tololoche and snare. Since the 1970s, more modern groups have used electric bass and drums instead of the traditional tololoche and snare. The combination of the 4 classical instruments (accordion, sixth bass, tololoche and snare) is also known as chirrin or chirrines in some regions. Some groupings use bass fifth instead of bass sixth.
