On Sonic Jump original release, the app was released in Japan on 21 February 2005, and then worldwide in April. Sonic Jump was then remade and released worldwide 18 October 2012, and then released for Android on 21 December.

In April 2014, a sequel to this Sonic Jump game was released on iOS and Android devices, entitled Sonic Jump Fever.

While games in the Sonic the Hedgehog series commonly involve running from side to side, Sonic Jump involves no running, but rather, Sonic jumping through the stages vertically to get to the top of the stage.The player in Sonic Jump controls Sonic by tilting the device left or right. Sonic jumps automatically, though a "double jump" move can be used upon tapping the touchscreen.in Sonic Jump Rings are collected throughout the stages, and accumulated rings can be used to purchase further content in the game, such as items, upgrades, or additional playable characters. Players in Sonic Jump can "level up" by achieving certain objectives in each stage; increasing the player's level will allow access to new content for purchase
