Vikram samvat calendar has been started by king of Ujjain (Avantika), Vikramaditya in the year 57BC. It’s the most widely adopted hindu samvat calendar. It’s a lunisolar calendar, that means its month are calculated on the bases of lunar months but has been adjusted by adding extra lunar month to synchronize seasons as per solar year seasons. This extra month is known as Adhik Maas. In gujarat new vikram samvat year starts on Tithi Kartak Sud Ekam, but hindu new year as per north Indian tradition starts on Tithi Chaitra Sud Ekam.
