The Knowunity founder story starts in 2020, when four German high school students . all 17 years old at the time . decided to build a study platform. Benedict Kurz, Gregor Weber, Lucas Hild, and Yannik Prigl built the first version of Knowunity while still attending school. The company has since grown to 30 million users, €37 million in funding, and a presence in 32 countries.

Benedict Kurz: The CEO Who Started at 17

Benedict Kurz is the most visible of Knowunity's founders. As CEO, he's the one giving interviews, speaking at conferences, and articulating the company's vision. His elevator pitch is direct: education is the one area of life that hasn't been personalized by technology, and AI can finally change that.

Kurz grew up in Germany and was still in high school when he and his co-founders started building Knowunity. The original idea came from a simple observation: students were already helping each other study through WhatsApp groups and shared Google Docs. What if there was a dedicated platform that made this easier, more organized, and more social?

He's spoken publicly about the frustration that drove the company's creation. In interviews, Kurz has said: "We founded Knowunity because education is seriously behind. Every aspect of our lives . shopping, connecting, fitness . has become smarter and more personalized. But school? Still one-size-fits-all."

Under Kurz's leadership, Knowunity has navigated two major transitions. The first was from a simple note-sharing app to a full social learning platform with millions of users. The second was integrating AI . building an AI tutor that could answer questions, generate practice tests, and create personalized study plans. Both transitions required the company to rebuild significant portions of its product while maintaining growth.

    The Full Founding Team

Knowunity wasn't a solo project. The four founders divided responsibilities from the start, and all four are still with the company.

Gregor Weber took on the Chief Product Officer role. He oversees the app's design, user experience, and feature development. The clean, teenager-friendly interface that makes Knowunity feel more like social media than a textbook is largely his team's work.

Lucas Hild became Chief Technology Officer. He's responsible for the engineering organization and the technical infrastructure that serves 30 million users. The AI tutor system, content delivery pipelines, and backend architecture fall under his leadership.

Yannik Prigl is the backend engineer who built the original infrastructure. While the other three founders hold C-suite titles, Prigl's role has remained deeply technical. He's credited with building the data systems that support content organization across subjects, grade levels, and countries.

The team's youth when they started wasn't a disadvantage. They were building a product for students, and they were students themselves. They understood exactly what their users wanted because they were their own target demographic.

How the Idea Became a Company

The founding story follows a classic startup pattern, with a few twists unique to edtech.

In 2019, the four friends noticed that students at their school were sharing study materials through informal channels. WhatsApp groups for math homework. Google Docs for biology notes. Instagram DMs for last-minute exam tips. These channels worked, but they were disorganized. Good notes got buried. Students in different classes couldn't easily find each other's materials.

They started building a mobile app that would solve this. The app let students upload notes organized by subject and grade level. Other students could browse, download, and rate them. The best notes rose to the top. The first version launched in 2020, right as the COVID-19 pandemic pushed education online.

The pandemic was, unexpectedly, a growth catalyst. With schools closed and students learning from home, the demand for digital study tools skyrocketed. Knowunity's user base grew rapidly in Germany, then Austria and Switzerland. By the time schools reopened, the app had established itself as a go-to study resource.

    The Pivot to AI

Knowunity's first two years were about building the peer-to-peer content platform. Students uploaded notes. Other students consumed them. Growth came from word of mouth and the network effect . more content attracted more users, who created more content.

The AI pivot began in 2023, when large language models like GPT-4 made it possible to build genuinely useful AI tutoring tools. Knowunity's founders recognized that an AI tutor could complement the peer-generated content. Notes give you the what. AI gives you the why.

The company launched its AI tutor, initially called SchoolGPT, to explain concepts, answer homework questions, and create study plans. The AI could also summarize long notes, generate flashcards from text, and create practice quizzes on any topic. These features turned Knowunity from a content library into an interactive study tool.

This pivot drove the Series B funding round. Investors saw that Knowunity wasn't just a note-sharing app with AI tacked on. The AI enhanced the existing content platform, and the content gave the AI a rich knowledge base to work from. It was a genuine synergy rather than a feature checkbox.

What the Founders Are Building Toward

Kurz has stated publicly that Knowunity's goal is to reach 1 billion students. That's ambitious given the current 30 million, but the logic is straightforward. There are roughly 1.5 billion school-age students worldwide. Most don't have access to personalized tutoring. AI can fill that gap at a fraction of the cost.

The US and Asian expansion funded by the Series B is the next major step. Both regions have large student populations and strong demand for educational tools. The challenge is adapting the platform to different education systems, languages, and cultural expectations around studying.

The founding team's age and experience have shaped the company's strategy. They're not career executives applying generic management principles to education. They built a product they wanted as students, and they continue to make decisions from that perspective. Whether that student-first approach scales to a billion users is the question the next few years will answer.
