Suno, Inc. is the company behind the Suno AI music generator. It was started in 2022 in Cambridge, Massachusetts by four machine learning researchers who'd previously worked together at Kensho Technologies, an AI analytics firm. In the four years since, Suno has grown to over 100 million users, raised hundreds of millions in venture funding, and become the most widely used AI music tool on the market. Here's who built it and how the company got here.
Who Founded Suno AI?
The four co-founders are Mikey Shulman, Martin Camacho, Georg Kucsko, and Keenan Freyberg.
Mikey Shulman is the CEO and the most public-facing of the group. Before Suno, he was a machine learning researcher at Kensho Technologies, where all four founders met. Shulman holds a PhD in physics from Harvard, where his research focused on applying machine learning to astrophysics problems. He's also a musician; he plays in a band, which explains why the team pivoted from text-to-speech research to music generation specifically.
Martin Camacho is another Harvard physics PhD and a musician. At Kensho, he worked on natural language processing systems for financial documents. At Suno, he's focused on the model architecture, the underlying AI systems that turn text into audio.
Georg Kucsko and Keenan Freyberg are both machine learning engineers who worked alongside Shulman and Camacho at Kensho. Kucsko also has a Harvard physics background. Freyberg brings software engineering expertise that's helped scale Suno's infrastructure as the user base grew from thousands to over 100 million.
The founding team was small, about 10-12 people in the early days, and stayed that way through the initial product launch.
How Suno Got Started
Suno didn't begin as a music company. The team was originally working on a text-to-speech program called Bark. Users liked it and started asking: "Can it sing?" The question was a joke, but the team took it seriously. They adapted the Bark architecture to handle music generation and launched an early version on Discord in 2023.
The Discord launch was scrappy; users typed prompts into a bot channel and waited for generations to come back. It was janky, but it worked well enough that people kept using it. By December 2023, Suno had a proper web interface and was generating enough buzz that the team knew they'd stumbled onto something bigger than a research project.
Suno AI Funding and Valuation
Suno has raised money at an accelerating pace:
- Seed and Series A (2023-2024): Early funding rounds backed by Lightspeed Venture Partners and other investors. Amounts weren't publicly detailed but were in the tens of millions.
- Series B ($125 million, May 2024): Led by Lightspeed with participation from Nat Friedman, Daniel Gross, and others. This round fueled the V4 development and infrastructure scaling.
- Series C (late 2025): Raised at a $2.45 billion valuation. Annual recurring revenue had crossed $200 million by this point, with 12 million users.
- Series D ($400 million, June 2026): Pushed Suno's valuation to $5.4 billion, more than double the Series C valuation just seven months earlier. ARR hit $300 million with 100 million users and 2 million paying subscribers.
The $5.4 billion valuation makes Suno the most valuable standalone AI music company. For context, that puts it ahead of most music tech companies that aren't streaming platforms.
Where Suno Stands Now
Suno's main product is the AI music generator, web, iOS, and Android. It's integrated into Microsoft Copilot, giving it distribution through Microsoft's AI products. The Warner Music partnership (November 2025) gave Suno licensed training data and a commercial music industry relationship that its competitor Udio doesn't have.
The company still faces legal headwinds. Sony and Universal's copyright lawsuits are unresolved as of mid-2026, and the GEMA ruling in Germany (July 2026) was a setback. But the funding and user growth suggest investors and users are betting that AI music generation is a category that will exist regardless of how these particular lawsuits play out.
