Gamescom 2026 runs August 26 through August 30 in Cologne, and Xbox is bringing over 25 playable games to its booth. The one most people will queue for? Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. Infinity Ward's latest entry in the Modern Warfare reboot series launches October 23 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2, but you can play it months before release. Between the COD MW4 playable demo at Gamescom, the Call of Duty: NEXT livestream on August 22, and two open beta weekends, there's a clear path to launch day. Here's everything we know so far.
1. What Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Brings to Gamescom 2026
The COD MW4 Gamescom 2026 demo is the headline attraction at Xbox's booth in Hall 7 (A-061), running on Xbox Series X hardware. It features core 6v6 multiplayer combat, the same mode that defines the Modern Warfare 4 experience. Xbox has 140 playable stations set up across all featured titles, but Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Gamescom attendees get the prime setup.
If you played the early access beta that started August 21, the Gamescom demo gives you a chance to try a different slice of MW4 multiplayer. If you missed it, this is your first shot at the game before the open beta begins on August 28. Xbox FanFest also returns on August 26 with a community celebration at the booth to kick off the event. The booth opens to the public August 27 through August 30.
2. Inside the MW4 Campaign: A Korean Peninsula Story
Modern Warfare 4's campaign takes the series to the Korean Peninsula for a conflict that Infinity Ward wants to feel "as if pulled from headline news." North Korea launches a full-scale invasion, and the story splits between two perspectives. Captain Price returns as an outlaw who went rogue from the military system and Task Force 141. He forms a rebel alliance to fight on his own terms. The second perspective belongs to Parker, a young South Korean private who gets dropped into a war he barely understands.
Jack O'Hara from Infinity Ward explained that the choice of Korea came from several angles. The region is geographically far from anything previous Modern Warfare games explored. The team also drew on Korean culture for reference, pulling from K-Pop groups like NewJeans. South Korea's mandatory military service gave the writers a narrative angle they hadn't used before. New mechanics include a revised ballistics system and an intelligent perception system meant to make firefights feel more grounded.
The DMZ mode returns as a standalone experience set in a demilitarized zone called Hajin, with a storyline that picks up where the campaign leaves off. Players need to own the base game to access DMZ this time around. That's a change from previous entries.
3. MW4 Multiplayer Drops Bullet Spread
The Modern Warfare IV gameplay shown so far points to a real shift in how multiplayer feels. Infinity Ward removed bullet spread, so shots go exactly where you aim. That sounds like a small detail. It changes every gunfight. No more losing a duel because your weapon decided to throw bullets wide of the reticle.
The biggest new addition is Kill Block, first shown at Fanatics Fest 2026. Details are still limited, but Infinity Ward has described it as a shifting multiplayer experience that changes between matches. The classic 10v10 Gunfight mode returns in a faster-paced format. Ground War supports over 100 players with drivable tanks and other vehicles. Search and Destroy is back alongside other franchise staples.
The beta let players try 20-plus operators and 19 weapons across maps ranging from tight 3v3 skirmishes to large-scale vehicle combat. Not bad for a free preview. MW4 multiplayer supports cross-platform play across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. The PS5 version is PS5 Pro Enhanced.
4. Call of Duty NEXT Goes Live August 22
Before Gamescom even opens its doors, Activision is hosting Call of Duty: NEXT on August 22. The livestream features Infinity Ward developers, content creators, and special guests breaking down the MW4 multiplayer design, new map mechanics, and additional details ahead of the October 23 launch. The broadcast starts right before the early access beta goes live, so players can watch the full breakdown and then immediately jump in.
Activision has called it the largest Modern Warfare 4 gameplay event to date. If you're trying to decide whether to pre-order, the NEXT livestream is where you'll see the most new information before Gamescom gameplay impressions start hitting social media.
5. How to Access the Modern Warfare 4 Beta
The Modern Warfare 4 beta runs across two weekends with different access requirements.
Early access runs August 21 through August 25 for players who pre-order on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or PC. This first weekend is locked behind a pre-order on those three platforms.
The open beta runs August 28 through September 1 and opens to all platforms, including Nintendo Switch 2. You don't need a pre-order for this weekend. Switch 2 players do need an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription to join. Cross-platform play is enabled during the open beta.
Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders for Modern Warfare 4 open on August 27, right between the two beta weekends. If you're on the fence about the Switch 2 version, the open beta is your chance to test it before buying. Pre-ordering either edition also gets you into the early access beta, so if you want both weekends, pre-order before August 21.
6. MW4 Pre-Order Editions: Standard vs. Vault
Modern Warfare 4 comes in two editions. The Standard Edition costs $69.99 and includes the base game, open beta early access, campaign early access starting October 16, and the Hunter Killer Operator Skin. Pre-ordering the Standard Edition also gets the Hostile Alliance Operator Pack.
The Vault Edition runs $99.99 and adds the Special Forces Operator Pack, the Signature Weapon Collection, one season of BlackCell content, and DMZ deployment rewards on top of everything in the Standard Edition. Pricey, but you get a lot of extras. The Modern Warfare 4 release date is October 23, 2026, across all platforms.
7. Gamescom 2026: When and Where to Watch
If you can't make it to Cologne, Xbox will stream Gamescom coverage live on YouTube and Twitch. The broadcast runs August 26 and 27. Times for both days:

Expect gameplay demos, developer interviews, trailers, and special guests across both days. The Xbox booth in Hall 7 (A-061) is open to the public from August 27 through August 30. Accessibility options include Xbox Adaptive Controllers, adjustable play stations, a quiet room, sensory items, and on-site assistance. ASL, BSL, and German Sign Language interpreters are available daily, along with English and German audio description.
For Call of Duty fans, the COD Gamescom booth is the place to be. But if you're watching from home, the YouTube and Twitch streams are your best bet for seeing MW4 multiplayer in action before the open beta opens up. Either way, you're covered.
8. What Comes Next for Call of Duty 2026
Modern Warfare 4 isn't the only Call of Duty title in the mix. The Call of Duty hub now supports Modern Warfare 4, Black Ops 7, and Warzone. Players can switch between titles without closing the application. Warzone will drop Xbox One support at the end of Black Ops 7 Season 06.
The roadmap from here is straightforward. Call of Duty: NEXT on August 22 drops the first big multiplayer reveal. Gamescom runs August 26 through August 30 with the playable demo. The open beta opens August 28 for all platforms. Then the full game launches October 23.
