FINAL FANTASY XIV: Evercold Coming January 2027: Sixth Expansion, New Jobs, and EVANGELION Crossover Revealed
Square Enix revealed FINAL FANTASY XIV: Evercold at Fan Festival 2026, coming January 2027 with two new jobs, a frozen Fourth World setting, and an EVANGELION crossover raid.

Square Enix opened FFXIV Fan Festival 2026 in Anaheim with a bombshell: the sixth Final Fantasy XIV expansion is called Evercold, and it's arriving in January 2027. Producer Naoki Yoshida took the stage to reveal an ice-devastated mirror world, two new jobs, and a collaboration nobody saw coming. Here's everything we learned from the keynote.

What Was Shown in the Evercold Cinematic Trailer

The Evercold teaser opens on an elderly woman telling Au Ra children about a "promised land" that's now frozen solid, buried under spreading ice. Cut to the Warrior of Light, described as a "Wanderer" in the Japanese material, descending from the stars alongside Estinien and Alphinaud, crash-landing into a dying world.

This isn't Ishgard 2.0. The terrain shows massive crystal formations unlike anything in Eorzea, skeletal dragon-head structures jutting from the snow, and what looks like crystal-powered machinery half-swallowed by frost. There's a giant magical creature roaming the wastes. Enemy, god, or something in between. Square Enix isn't saying yet.

The art direction leans heavily into fantasy-meets-organic, with towns built around enormous glowing crystals and farms huddled under looming mechanical structures. The mood is cold, quiet, and tense. This world is running out of time.

Key Details From the FINAL FANTASY XIV: Evercold Reveal

Two New Jobs: Tank and Physical Ranged DPS

Square Enix confirmed two new jobs for the FFXIV 8.0 expansion: one tank, one physical ranged DPS. Yoshida didn't name them during the keynote, but a separate report from Fan Fest Berlin revealed one job codenamed "Bastion." Role details beyond that are still under wraps. Expect a full job action trailer closer to the Evercold launch date.

    Level Cap Raised to 110

The level cap jumps from 100 to 110 with the FFXIV sixth expansion. That means new actions, traits, and rotations across all existing jobs. The 10-level increment keeps the pattern set by Shadowbringers and Endwalker.

The Fourth World: A Mirror World Consumed by Ice

Evercold takes players to the Fourth World, one of the thirteen mirror reflections (Shards) of the Source. This world has been ravaged by the unchecked power of ice. Not a climate problem, but a magical catastrophe. The Warrior of Light previously crossed into the First during Shadowbringers. Now the crossing into the Shards resumes, picking up threads left dangling since Endwalker.

The Godless Realm SAGA Begins Proper

Yoshida confirmed that Dawntrail was the opening chapter of a new storyline called The Godless Realm SAGA. Evercold is chapter two. After the Hydaelyn-Zodiark arc concluded in Endwalker, the game needed a new long-term narrative spine. Dawntrail served as a transitional expansion. Now Evercold pushes deeper into whatever "godless" means for this universe. The Final Fantasy XIV Godless Realm storyline marks the first time Square Enix has given the post-Endwalker arc a formal name, setting up what could span multiple expansions.

    Weekly Redesign and Seasons

This is the structural overhaul that caught the most attention. Evercold introduces a season system that replaces the daily grind with a weekly rhythm. Key changes:

    • A new "Adventurer Dynamic" UI that tracks character growth, gear, quest progress, and weekly objectives in one place
    • A weekly points system where different activities award points, and hitting thresholds levels up your seasonal rank for gear and rewards
    • Unfinished weekly points carry over to the next week (one week only)
    • Daily tasks shift to weekly: clear a dungeon, finish a trial, submit crafters' collectables, complete an ocean fishing trip, etc.

The goal, per Yoshida, is to fight the burnout that inevitably sets in with long-running MMO daily loops. If you miss a week, you're not permanently behind.

    Armoury Update and Character Customization

Multi-job players get a quality-of-life win: the Armoury system is getting reworked to support swapping between jobs more smoothly. Character customization also expands with more ways to stand out visually. No specifics on what that looks like yet, but it's a direct response to community requests for deeper glamour and identity options.

Nintendo Switch 2 Release in August 2026

Before Evercold even lands, Final Fantasy XIV arrives on Nintendo Switch 2 this August. A few things to know:

    • Early access will test server stability before the full launch
    • The Switch 2 version requires its own monthly subscription
    • You don't need Nintendo Switch Online to play
    • Existing subscribers on other platforms who also have Nintendo Switch Online get 50% off the Switch 2 sub

This is a big deal. FFXIV has been on PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Mac, but Nintendo platforms remained the last unconquered frontier. That changes in a few weeks.

EVANGELION Crossover: Ghosts of Desire Alliance Raid

Square Enix and khara are collaborating on a three-part Alliance Raid series called Ghosts of Desire, tying into the 30th anniversary of Neon Genesis Evangelion. It'll be a 24-player raid, same format as the Nier: Automata and Final Fantasy XI crossover raids from previous expansions. The FFXIV EVANGELION crossover marks the fourth major external collaboration Alliance Raid in the game's history.

Square Enix is developing, khara is supervising. Yoshida confirmed it launches after the Evercold 8.0 release; the exact patch wasn't specified. Following in the footsteps of Return to Ivalice, YoRHa: Dark Apocalypse, and Echoes of Vana'diel, this continues the tradition of blockbuster crossover Alliance Raids. Details on bosses, gear designs, and story integration are still coming.

New Dungeons, Trials, Ultimate Raid, and PvP Updates

The MMO fundamentals are all here:

    • Multiple new dungeons and trials
    • A brand-new raid series (normal and savage)
    • A new Ultimate raid
    • PvP updates
    • New gear sets and crafting recipes
    • Expanded Duty Support for solo players

Patch 7.5 content running from April through September 2026 bridges the gap to January, including the final Echoes of Vana'diel raid wing, the Cosmic Exploration zone "Oxia," and the introduction of the Beastmaster limited job in 7.56.

Context: What This Means for Final Fantasy XIV

Dawntrail was always going to be a tough act to follow. Shadowbringers and Endwalker formed a near-perfect duology that wrapped up a decade of storytelling. Starting fresh meant risk, and Dawntrail's reception split the community. Some loved the lighter tone and vacation vibe, others felt it didn't carry the weight of what came before.

Evercold looks like the course correction people were hoping for. The ice setting alone signals a tonal shift. Fourth World lore ties back to the Shards mystery that's been simmering since Shadowbringers. And the Final Fantasy XIV Godless Realm framing gives the story a clear direction after the Endwalker finale left everything feeling... settled.

The weekly redesign is the wildcard. FFXIV has run on the same daily-roulette rhythm for years. Moving to a weekly model with carryover points is genuinely bold for an MMO of this scale. If it works, it could become the template other games borrow from. If it doesn't, it'll be reverted within a patch cycle. Either way, Yoshida's willingness to take a structural risk this late in the game's life cycle says something about how seriously Square Enix is taking player fatigue.

The Switch 2 launch, meanwhile, opens the door to an audience that's never had access to this game on their platform of choice. Combined with the free trial expansion to level 80 (including Shadowbringers), the barrier to entry for FFXIV has never been lower.

Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold: What to Expect Next

Square Enix says they're confident enough in Evercold to announce the FINAL FANTASY XIV: Evercold launch date earlier than usual; normally they wait until the last Fan Festival keynote. The 7.5 patch series will carry the story directly into the expansion's opening, with the final 7.56 patch in September leading directly into the January launch.

If you're a returning player, now's a good time to catch up on Dawntrail's post-launch content and wrap up any loose ends from Endwalker's alliance raids. The free login campaigns running throughout 2026 make it easy to hop back in without committing to a sub right away.

Final Fantasy XIV is available on PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and Mac, with the Nintendo Switch 2 version arriving in August 2026.
